Social studies focus on people and their lives. They help us understand ourselves and others. Social studies is a field of study formed by combining art, literature, and the social sciences through an interdisciplinary approach in order to develop citizenship competencies. (Orhan AKINOĞLU)
Within the school curriculum, social studies provides a systematic and coordinated field of study filtered from content related to anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology. The primary aim of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and rational decisions for the public good as citizens of a democratic society with cultural differences in an interdependent world. (Sönmez, V.)
In all definitions, effective citizenship emerges as the general goal of social studies. An effective citizen can be defined as an individual who is aware of their rights and responsibilities, respects other citizens, and does not remain indifferent to problems in their country and the world but thinks of solutions. In a democratic country, the fundamental purpose of social studies is to raise active citizens equipped with these skills. Because democracy develops only through people who believe in it and are equipped with the necessary knowledge, values, and skills. The social studies course enables students to recognize the society they live in, understand their social environment, and become active individuals as part of this society.
It is important for the continuation of a healthy society that students get to know other individuals they live with, remain in harmony, and accept the differences of others. This is not merely a behavior taught at school. Families also have values they need to teach students from an early age. While the foundations of their personality are being established, families must set a good example. In addition to the achievements provided at school, all attitudes and behaviors that students will use in social life should also be applied and modeled within the family. The attitudes, behaviors, and values acquired in the family are further developed at school, supporting social studies education in raising individuals compatible with its general definition.
In social studies courses, by teaching historical events, it is expected that students learn lessons from past events, become aware of what is happening in our country and the world, think about issues concerning all humanity, search for solutions, better understand the cultural characteristics of the society they live in, and be conscious of their responsibilities towards society. In social studies education, one does not remain stuck in the past; on the contrary, students are given the awareness of being effective citizens by questioning what can be done today based on historical events, and how to be a good citizen in their society and country—affecting both the present and the future.
One of the main goals of social studies is to raise individuals who are effective citizens, who believe in democracy and its strength, who take ownership of their future by learning from their past, who can think critically, are respectful of differences, can adapt to the innovations of their era, and aim to set a good example for future generations.
